Review_JunL 629/ Wing Sung 629 Piston Steel Nib

Hello Comrade,

I find the steel nibs from JunL is of better value than its gold nibs.

As a tradition, avoid JunL on its new launch.

Correct me if anything wrong of the timeline, same as human parentes, JunL herself got no clue of its babys' birthdays. I did it for her here:

  • 629 with various fancy gold was launched in Nov, 2021.
  • 629 Steel + Piston was launched in Apr, 2022.
  • 629 Steel + Piston + Aluminum Piston Thread was launched in Dec, 2023 (only in lake blue, torpedo & flat, slot & full window)
  • 629 Steel is also available in vacumatic (the mechanism used in 601A 2018)
  • Other than stated, 629 is available in black/ coke red/ pepsi blue, in both torpedo and flat top (circa mid 2022) , with translucent amber ink window Slot and Full.
  • As of the time of writing, all above are current in production.

I believe here is a better product description than any existing 629 online sales pages out there, before online sellers start brutally straight copying from here. I have gone through all the sales pages, I am stunned to see such quality of description in 2024. I wouldn't take leave to doubt my dog could do a better writing and be a more responsible seller. Money is too easy for those middle-men.

Pro

  • nib OK, piston OK, overall finishing in 2024, OK+.
  • for alum piston thread, I find it very slight change to the balance of the pen towards the end  the of pen. I have no plastic version. I am using my imagination here. The Poor Man 629 is with plastic piston thread.
  • ink capacity of 1.6ml + 0.2ml, same as other pistons from JunL (maybe I will do another article to explain why all JunL pistons share the same capacity, from the baby 629 to giant 630/6XX Ebonite: as only one type of piston head from JunL.)

Con

  • price is in the high end of spectrum of a china steel nib + piston.
  • factory piston assembly not perfect, rework needed for an ink capacity extension of 0.2ml. Refer to my JunL 632 Blogger page.
  • only EF/F nib width selection for the steel. I want a bloody M.

To summary, honestly, why not consider a Majohn T5? For half the price. You get 99% the same, only the piston thread would be in plastic, which I see no issue at all. And, you will be able to have your factory nib in M, which writes perfectly!
